I have always loved weddings – when my sister and I were younger, we had the dream of owning a bridal shop that had a tea room for small showers or just for the gals to hang out in…we wanted to name it ‘The Hope Chest’!!!!

As years go by, you see that some ‘pipe dreams’ may not be a wise decision, or other events in your life lead you down a different path – but I was raised to remember that you can do ANYTHING if you put your mind to it and don’t ever let someone else dictate what you do with your life….

I went to the University of South Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geology, now I know that is a million miles from being an event planner, but you just never know what is going to happen ūüôā

My career with event planning began almost out of necessity one lovely Saturday afternoon.  My wonderful sister has a fabulous talent of photography, she is not a professional but she will do photos for friends Рso when she was asked by her dear friend, Sandra, to photograph her wedding, my sister asked if I would help out??  Of course, I love weddings!!

When everything was just about to get started, I asked where the planner was to get it all in order and get ready- I was told that she had been at the rehearsal but could not make the wedding itself??¬† I was not sure why but we had hit chaos and something needed to be done -so I just began putting everyone in order and sending them down the aisle.¬† When we got to the reception, a friend stepped in to help out at this point- so it was time to cut the cake and she instructed them to cut into the top layer!!!¬† I came from the back as quickly¬†as I could to stop them quietly and told them the tradition of the top layer – she thanked me later and made the sweet comment about ‘missing my calling’.¬†

I did not give it a ton of thought but it was in the back of my mind – what if I did miss my calling??¬† I continued to work as a geologist but began doing research in event planning, certification, starting a business, etc.¬†I continued to help friends and co-workers plan events for fun and excitement.¬† We did a few weddings but also did anniversary parties, children’s events, birthday parties, etc.

At this point, I was so lucky to have met the most wonderful man! Darren and I dated for some time and then in a beautiful, memorable event, he asked me to marry him – so we began planning for ourselves.¬† We decided to get married at Brookgreen Gardens, Pawleys Island – the planning process went fabulous, but being that I had done this many times, I thought it would be a piece of cake…when I look back now, the one mistake I made was NOT having a planner/coordinator come in to take that stress off of me, Darren, our family and friends- and we had a small wedding of only 50 people!

So after that, I knew- I wanted to do this, I wanted to help couples and families make thier dreams come to life and all they do is show up and ENJOY!!!!  I went to school, seminars, and through job shadowing to finally become certified by the Association of Bridal Consultants.  Darren and I started our little business here in Columbia with a couple of brides that are now my closest and dearest friends.

We slowly grew and expanded to jobs all over South Carolina, and not just weddings- we now have all sorts of events from social soirees to any corporate occasion.

Each event is very special to us and we bring the highest level of¬†service and professionalism to every event we are lucky to be working with –

Happy Planning-

Melanie and Darren Murphy
